The All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi (AIIMS- New Delhi) is the finest and premier Medical Institute in India which operates autonomously under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare - MHRD, Government of India and is governed by the AIIMS Act, 1956. It is the most repute public hospital and medical research university based in New Delhi. All-India Institute of Medical Sciences was established in the year 1956. 

The Institute has comprehensive facilities for teaching, research and patient-care. As provided in the Act, AIIMS conducts teaching programs in medical and para-medical courses both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and awards its own degrees. In the field of medical research AIIMS is the lead, having more than 600 research publications by its faculty and researchers in a year. In addition, AIIMS also runs a College of Nursing and trains students for B.Sc.(Hons.) Nursing post-certificate) degrees.

The college is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC)  and is affiliated to Statutory Autonomous AIIMS, New Delhi. It has an annual intake of 107 seats in MBBS, 747 seats in 29 disciplines of Post-Graduate studies and 514 seats in 33 disciplines of Super-Specialization studies. Admissions to these courses are based on entrance examinations conducted all over the country. AIIMS, Delhi is having the highest number of seats in PG and SS studies when compared to any other medical college in India and thus makes it the most desired Medical Institute owing to its supremacy in maintaining the highest standard of Medical education in India. It has received numerous awards and appreciations one amongst which is Kayakalp Award (Cleanest Medical Facility) for 3 consecutive years 2017, 2018 and 2019: First Prize for maintaining cleanliness within the institute's premises.

Rankings: 

- AIIMS (New Delhi) was ranked 231 in the world in the 2020 category of Life Sciences and Medicine and 151-200 in the category of Medicine by QS WUR.

- AIIMS (New Delhi) was ranked 1 in South Asia in 2020 in the category of Life Sciences and Medicine by QS WUR.

- AIIMS (New Delhi) also features in the World's Best Hospitals 2020Top 100 by Newsweek.

- The Institute has consistently maintained the Number 1 ranking among all medical colleges in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2020 and 2019.  

- AIIMS (New Delhi) was also ranked 1 in India by India Today  and Outlook India in 2020 and by The Week in 2019

Achievements:

- AIIMS is the first Indian center to perform a successful cardiac transplant. The surgery was performed by P Venugopal, the ex director of AIIMS in 1994.

- AIIMS is an advanced center of stem cell therapy in India, especially cardiac and neurological. It holds a reputation of being a pioneer in stem cell injection.

- AIIMS has India's first and only minimally invasive surgery training center, under collaboration with Germany.

- The first in-vitro fertilization facility in the public sector set up at the AIIMS (New Delhi) in February 2008.

Campuses: 

Main campus:

The main campus of AIIMS New Delhi is located in Ansari Nagar. It is adjacent to the South Extension-II market and lies on the both sides of Sir Aurobindo Marg.

AIIMS Main campus is spread mainly into 5 locations:

East Campus – Containing OPD Block, Main Hospital Block, Ward Block, Medical College, Research Section, Convergence Block, BB Dixit Library, Administrative Wing, Undergraduates Hostels, Central Lawn, Jawaharlal Auditorium and staff quarters. The 4 Specialty Centers for Cardiothoracic and Neurosciences, Cancer Center, Center for Ophthalmic Sciences and Center for Dental Education and Research are also within this East Campus.

West Campus – It comprises mainly staff quarters and residences.

JPNA Trauma Center – It is exclusively designated for Emergency services. In June 2018 a tunnel and ramp-road link between East campus and JPNA Trauma Center Campus was also opened. This link route is very useful in fast transferring of critical patients across the two Campuses. Beside JPNA Trauma Center, a 100 Bed Plastic and Burns Surgical Unit Hospital is also under construction, it will also comprise a Skin Bank for Burns Injuries.

Masjid Moth Campus – This site contains new Post-Graduate and Resident Doctor's apartments. Underground parking block is also situated here. Upcoming New OPD Block, Mother and Child Care Unit, Surgical Block and Geriatric Block are also under construction here. These new blocks are aimed to reduce the patient load on the present OPD block in East Campus which is currently overhauled by nearly approx. 10,000 out-patients per day.

Ayurvigyan Nagar Campus – It is too for faculty and staff's residential accommodations.

Extension campuses of AIIMS (New Delhi) Jhajjar-AIIMS-II

The second campus of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS-II), spread over 330 acres (1.335 square kilometres) of land. The National Cancer Institute is first to come up, next is the National Cardiovascular centre as a joint venture between Govt of Haryana and Union health ministry in a series of future developments. The 710 bedded National Cancer Institute of India and Infectious and Community Diseases Centre at AIIMS (New Delhi)'s Jhajjar Extension Campus is constructed at a cost of 2,034 crores on 32 acres along the lines of National Cancer Institute of the USA and it is focused on treatment and research on the India-specific cancer. National Heart Institute (India) is also being established here and a heliport is being developed for the Air Ambulance to serve emergency patients from remote areas. 

Ballabhgarh Extension campus

Ballabhgarh, established in 1965, is an extension campus of AIIMS in Ballabhgarh city of Faridabad district in Haryana. This rural field practice OPD campus was set up in collaboration with Government of Haryana as "Comprehensive Rural Health Services Project".

Ghaziabad Extension campus

An intensive field practice area, the National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre is an extension campus of AIIMS (New Delhi) in Ghaziabad city of Uttar Pradesh.

Admission Process

The counseling and examination for admission of students to All India Institute of Medical Sciences Post Graduate Medical Degree courses is done by  INI CET (Institute of National Importance Combined Entrance Test) is a national-level examination conducted by AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences), Delhi. For admission into MD/MS/M.Ch.(6years)/DM(6years)/MDS.It is held twice a year in January and July month. Candidates through this exam are provided admission into PG courses – MD/ MS (6-year courses) DM/ M.Ch / MDS (3-year courses). Students who have qualified for this exam are eligible for admission into these courses in various AIIMS campusesJIPMER, Puducherry, NIMHANS, Bengaluru, PGIMER, Chandigarh.
